Tomato and Date Chutney

Amazingly easy and tasty chutney. I usually make onion chutney, but as you all are aware of the sky rocketing price of onions, I wanted an alternate. So I thought of making tomato chutney and while making I thought of adding dates to it and it turned out quite well and yummmm!!!!
The sourness of tomatoes is balanced by sweetness of jaggery and dates. You can adjust the spiciness by adding or reducing dry red chillies. So Happy cooking...

Ingredients:

Tomatoes - 4 medium
Dates - 8-10 (deseeded)
Tamarind pulp - 1 tbsp
Dry red chili: 4-5
Ginger - 1 tbsp
Jaggery - 2 tbsp

For tempering

Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
Oil - 1tsp
salt to taste

Method:

Boil tomatoes and dry red chillies in water.

Peel the skin of tomatoes. Grind tomatoes, dry red chillies, ginger, jaggery, salt to a fine smooth paste.

Grind deseeded dates to a fine paste as well.

Heat oil in a kadhai. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.

Upon crackling add the ground tomato paste and cook for a minute.

Now add dates paste and cook until oil seperates. Adjust seasoning.

Tip: You can soak dates and then grind to paste, since I thought of adding in the last minute, I did not soak it.
